Hello all,
today I was at the Musée Art Decoratif near the Louvre with my class from my Culture of Design course to have a look at furniture from the 1920's till present-day. Very interesting indeed! I noted done quite many interesting artists and most interesting was the introduction of furnishing art in the 1980's, where a piece of furnishing suddenly became a piece of sculptural art. Notable here was the Memphis group. I definitely saw quite a many things I would like to decorate my apartment with but than again I saw just as many things that i would never want to decorate my apartment with!
Another thing that I noticed when observing a highly organic-shaped Art Nouveau room interior was, that one must have felt so "fat" in such an interior. Everyone I told this laughed at first but after I explained they understood. Just think about it, if all the furniture around you has these smooth and elegant curves, looking so delicate, and so fragile, one a very skinny and elegant women would fit into the scenario aesthetically. Anyone a bit curvy would simply pop out of the frame. Anyways, thats was simply how I perceived it to be.
Later in the day I went to uni to see a presentation by an Indian design research group called Quicksand. One of their group members was in Paris and My teacher from Culture of Design had asked him to drop by. He showed us various videos and photographs from the various projects his group had done and I was utterly fascinated. They had done a great variety of projects ranging from government-funded research projects on the use of the railroad in New Dehli and market ideas for Coca Cola's energy drink BURN á la Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll. The majority of their projects were done based on India and I enjoyed watching every single one. They had done some very interesting video work for each project, and their consumer research was presented in a very lively and clear manner, which made it easily accessible to people not involved in the project.
